OkuIzumo Tatara and Sword Museum

This museum in OkuIzumo, Shimane Prefecture is a must for lovers of Japanese swords. The museum documents the history of the Tatara steel manufacturing process where the finest steel produced was used to make Japanese swords. It also has in-depth information on the creation of Japanese swords. The lead Swordsmith receives a cultural permit from the government to create real Japanese swords. However, he can only make the amount designated in the permit within the time allocated. This is one of the only establishments where you can see them actually forge real Japanese swords. They also have live demonstrations of Battoujutsu, the art of drawing and cutting with Japanese swords. The targets for Battoujutsu are wet, rolled up straw mats. They represent a vulgar similarity to human limbs and a bamboo stick can be placed in the middle to represent bone.

Close to the museum is the highly reknowned Kamedake Hot Spring. The ideal place to unwind after visiting the sword museum.
