Unnan Sakura Festival 雲南さくら祭り

On your Japan travel tour through Unnan City 雲南市, Shimane Prefecture 島根県, in April, make sure you take a look at one of the most the amazing festivals 祭り Shimane 島根 has to offer.

The Unnan Sakura Festival 雲南さくら祭り is in early April and celebrates the flowering of Cherry Blossoms. 800 Cherry Blossom trees line the Hii River Bank forming a tunnel and this site is ranked in the top 100 Cherry Blossom sites of Japan.

There is no rank within the 100, it is accepted as a selection of the best and considering there are thousands of sites in Tokyo alone, this is quite a prestigious award.

Enjoy Hanami 花見, Japanese flower viewing, by sitting on the bank of the river having a picnic.  There are a variety of food stalls and special events during the day.  During the festival, this normally quiet country city is packed with local and international visitors.  Fireworks are also scheduled usually on a Saturday night.

Soon after the pink cherry blossoms finish in Kisuki town, nearby Mitoya town hosts the rare green cherry blossoms called "Gyoikou".
